GUEST LECTURE | Fulbright Distinguished Chair Professor D.V. Griffiths
Geotechnical risk: what are the chances? Join Fulbright Distinguished Chair Professor Vaughan Griffiths as he explores what lies beneath.
Join Professor Vaughan Griffiths, from the Colorado School of Mines. His area of expertise focusses on risk assessment in geotechnical engineering. As one of the world’s most highly cited geotechnical engineering researchers, Vaughan is currently in Australia working with colleagues at the Priority Research Centre for Geotechnical Science and Engineering on risk assessment and hazard mitigation in geotechnical applications.
Soil and rock encountered in building foundations and underground construction are among the most variable of all engineering materials. The modelling of these materials can benefit greatly from a statistical approach, leading to predictions of the probability of failure or inadequate performance. Learn more about the basic tenets of probability, and how these can be applied in geotechnical engineering: ranging from landslides to offshore wind turbine foundations.
Join us from 5pm for light refreshments followed by a fascinating discussion and opportunity for a q+a with Professor Griffiths and his University of Newcastle host and collaborator Professor Anna Giacomini
